Counselling & Psychotherapy. Consultancy. Supervision. Training

Juliana Hopkins

Welcome to my website. I hope the site gives you some idea of how I work and how I see counselling working.

  • I have 25 years of experience working as a counsellor, psychotherapist, superviser and teacher.
  • I work with individuals, as well as two people in a relationship.
  • I work person-to-person in Horrabridge, Devon, as well as online.

“When the other person is hurting, confused, troubled, anxious, alienated, terrified; or when he or she is doubtful of self-worth, uncertain as to identity, then understanding is called for. The gentle and sensitive companionship of an empathic stance… provides illumination and healing. In such situations deep understanding is, I believe, the most precious gift one can give to another.”

Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA).

Up until very recently I have been lecturing on the degree course in Counselling and Psychotherapy at Plymouth Marjon University. I joined the programme 2018 just as the degree was about to start its first academic year. This meant writing lectures from scratch, creating content on theory, research and practice. I’ve loved the teaching and the relationship with the students and staff.

I have been a founder director of Counsellors South West, set up by a small and dedicated group of GP surgery counsellors which has grown to cover the Plymouth, Teignbridge, South Hams, Tavistock and West Devon areas. It was a privilege to fight for Counselling’s place in Primary Care, helping NHS commissioners understand the value of counselling.

Below you will find a video of me talking about teaching Eastern and Western psychology to yoga teachers for the Devon School of Yoga.

    Counselling

Juliana as a counsellor is an invaluable life mirror who always present and listening.   She knows when and how to intervene at the appropriate moment helping me to face and accept challenging issues. She helps me find my way in life.  Juliana is a warm and caring human being.

    Supervision

I have found our supervision sessions invaluable in terms of constructive reflection which has enabled me to manage my clinical work and the potential emotional impact of it.

    Counselling

Until I started talking to you, I didn’t realise how much unnecessary mental baggage I was carrying! Thank you for providing space for me to unload, which has enabled me to keep going in a very stressful time.

    Supervision

I have been engaging in supervision sessions with Juliana on a monthly basis since Oct 2017. This in itself is testament to the successful relationship we have and the benefits I feel from the work we do together. Particularly I thrive, am inspired by, and develop my own practice from these of Juliana’s approaches to her work

    Counselling

During my appointments with Juliana as a counsellor she was patient and compassionate.  She gave me the time to talk about the pain I was going through at the time and helped me to slowly work through that pain to eventually come to a conclusion in my own time.  She was able to acknowledge how I was feeling without judgment.

    Supervision

Juliana has been my Supervisor for the past five years. As a Person-Centred Counsellor, I have valued her experience, her way of working…and her warmth. I have used her as a role model as well as a supporter.

    Supervision

Juliana challenges me when necessary but also reassures and encourages. When I have ventured into new fields, she has facilitated my learning and my practice. She has recommended books, provided copies of relevant articles and even checked facts with BACP

    Supervision

Juliana has been attentive and understanding during our (supervision) sessions. I have felt heard and held. Her knowledge and experience is evident and she is warm yet curious in her responses. I have learnt much from her and enjoy the warm friendly environment including from the dogs and cat

    Relationships

We have been in couple’s counselling with Juliana for over a year. Juliana is kind, compassionate, non judgemental and a great listener. It has helped us to listen better and understand what each other is saying underneath what we might be reacting too.

    Supervision

Juliana has been my clinical supervisor for six years now. Her deeply caring approach, her presence and her wisdom are invaluable to me. I feel perfectly supported and extremely fortunate in feeling I may bring up anything regarding client work – in addition to my personal introjects and sensibilities, to our sessions. It is a privilege to work with Juliana.
